Max

Jacket: Max's jacket in Mad Max 2 differs from the original Mad Max jacket. It has no waist-adjustment tabs, it has 2 symetrical pockets, and the horizontal seam between the shoulder blades is straight. For more info, see Special Topics: Jackets

Trousers: Same as in Mad Max: Black leather trousers with no back pockets, cut in a general "jeans" pattern.

Boots: Max's boots appear to be his exact pair from Mad Max, but many modifications have taken place. The badge and top adjustment belts have been removed, and a knife holder has been riveted in. Max's right boot also has a sewn/laced area on the rear, possibly an adjustment for the knife holder. Max's boots have a pair of leather boot bracelets on. The boot bracelets are unusual in that the metal ring is triangular, and there are small spikes/studs on the rear strap. For more info, see Special Topics: Boots

Shirt: Black, weathered Bonds raglan-cut T-shirt with all hems (collar, sleeves and bottom) cut off.

Shoulder pad: Rawlings Crusader football shoulder pad plate attached to football shoulder pad arch padding by 2 one-inch-wide leather straps. One belt 5/8 inch wide riveted to bottom of padding, fastened under the arm (this is made out of one of Max's missing top adjustment straps from his boots! Also see knee pad description for the location of the other strap!). For more info, see my detailed tutorial: How to Make Max's Shoulder Pad

Gloves: Max's gloves are weathered full-finger gloves (not fingerless gloves, or the gloves with the pre-made holes and velcro strap).

Name tag: Max's nametag is riveted in, as opposed to being pinned-on as in Mad Max. Max's badge number is "MFP 4073".

Music Box: There is a music box available at www.Schylling.com.

Legbrace/Caliper: I have confirmed that Max's legbrace is in fact based on what is the Aussie equivalent to 1967-1979 US Ford F-series pick-up tailgate hinges. (Thanks to Bill Brown, Jake Dark, Randy Foos and others for getting me to look into this.) Please don't confuse the F-series hinges with the 1966-1977 Bronco hinges: they are different! The hinges appear to be attached onto an AFO (Ankle Foot Orthosis) brace with 3 philips-head machine screws on each side. According to Randy Foos, the AFO brace is actually on backwards (maybe to keep all buckles to the rear). Two leather straps are attached to the hinges and the AFO brace has its own strap.
Tailgate hinges can be found at junkyards (you will need a large philips screwdriver and a 1/2" socket wrench to pull them). New ones are also available online HERE for $66 a pair.

Knee Pad: The knee pad still needs to be identified. It is a separate piece and not connected to the legbrace. The other missing top adjustment strap from Max's boots was used to secure the pad to the knee.

Belt: Black leather belt with a brass 2-prong buckle, D-rings on top and angled D-rings at the bottom. A shoulder strap is attached to the belt. Could be a Swedish officer's belt, but lately I've been leaning towards a dark brown British "Sam Browne" officer's belt because of the stitching pattern and the brass knob and hook fittings.

Tools and accessories: Hooked on the front of Max's belt is an adjustable spanner (monkey wrench) and a multi-tool knife (see below for details). On the back of the belt are two firefighting tools, a hatchet and a hydrant spanner - tools that were once in use by the New South Wales fire brigade (see below). New Zealand's fire brigades also used identical pouches. For pictures of the firefighting tools and pouches, click here.

Max's multi-tool knife is a 3-piece yatchman's rigging knife. The most widely available is the 3-piece "British Army Knife" (above).
